Open Up at Medialab Prado

I’m very excited to be one of the tutors for Medialab Prado’s Open Up Workshop the February in Madrid. The plan for the workshop is to develop projects for the digital façade of Medialab-Prado’s building. Jordi Claramont, Casey Reas, and Víctor Viña are also participating as tutors.

The program itself is really fascinating, bringing together ideas about art, publics, politics, and platforms. I’m looking forward to analyzing the process in terms of platform studies but from the perspective of active creation of an platform rather than through the analysis of a pre-existing system.

And really, who doesn’t like the prospect of creating something for a huge LED façade?

Theory / Practice at The Public School

Very excited about the inaugural meeting of a reading group I proposed at The Public School on Theory and Practice. We’ll periodically meet and interrogate this oft-encountered dichotomy in a variety of domains and contexts: politics, philosophy, art, ethics. The idea is that by looking at the issue from a number of angles, domains, and styles of thought, we will generate new connections and new articulations, and hopefully erode the boundaries between the two.

I’ll be leading the first session on January 24 with Sarah Kessler trying to lay a foundation and find some orientation for the class for other folks to pick up going forward.

Mobile Media 09 at UCLA DMA

This weekend the DMA is host to the Mobile Media 09 symposium and workshops. The Symposium was organized by Casey Reas and the workshops were organized by Casey, Myself, and the good folks at The Public School. We decided to try something a bit non-standard and used The Public School to generate ideas for workshops and get people interested. It was difficult for sure, but saturday will be a great day with workshops on iPhone SDK development, Python + Arduino + Nokia N810, and Writing the Mobile Web applications.

iPhone Workshop at Machine Project, Redux

Once again i’m teaching a workshop on programming for the iPhone using the iPhone SDK at Machine Project. The course is designed to be a good introduction to Xcode, Objective-C and making real-world applications for the AppStore. We won’t cover the basics of programming, so some programming experience is required.

Regular Expressions at The Public School

Doing a one-night workshop September 23 on Regular Expressions at The Public School. We’ll cover the basics of understanding Regex syntax, using Regex in a few popular languages, and look a few common use cases. More info here.

The Rebirth of Pragmatism at The Public School

Leading a reading group along with Sarah Kessler at The Public School on American Pragmatism. We’ll focus primarily on Rorty, but start with discussions of Dewey and James. There will also be a few readings by Stanley Fish and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak.

The class will have three meetings on July 12, 26, and August 9.

I’m teaching a 4 day intensive workshop on iPhone development at Machine Project. The course is designed to be a good introduction to Xcode, Objective-C and making real-world applications for the AppStore. We won’t cover the basics of programming, so some programming experience is required.

Processing Workshop at Machine Project, Again!

Once again I’m teaching a 4 day intensive workshop on Processing at Machine Project. The course starts on Feb. 14 and runs for 2 weeks. It will provide a good introduction and covers everything from the basics of the IDE up to libraries and media. No prior programming experience necessary (though it always helps).

Hegemony and Antagonism at The Public School

Teaching a course (really more leading a reading group) at The Public School on Laclau and Mouffe’s concepts of Hegemony and Antagonism. The reading group will involve a close reading of “Hegemony and Socialist Strategy” and selections from Mouffe and Laclau’s writing on Antagonism. We will also explore related texts by Richard Rorty, Jurgen Habermas, and possibly Derrida.

The class will have three meetings on September 14, 23, and 28.
